EBEC – European BEST Engineering Competition

What is EBEC?

EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition) is an annual Board of European Students of Technology event and is the largest real-time competition run by and with European students. This competition started in 2008 and has become a major event of BEST.

The EBEC project acts as a platform for technical university students and is organised on a voluntary basis by BEST members. In the activity, participants form teams of four and have to solve an interdisciplinary Innovative Design or Case Study challenge, thus addressing students from all engineering fields. The competition starts with a local round that takes place in all participating BEST Local Groups; the winners of the local rounds are invited to the national or regional rounds. Winners of these secondary rounds qualify for the EBEC Final, where they compete with students from all over the continent for the title of “BEST Engineers of Europe”.

Case Study

In the Case Study challenge, students analyse and solve a real problem from everyday life in society, without actually building a device or assembling materials, just developing a theoretical solution. At the end of the challenge, the team with the most innovative and practical idea will be declared the winner.

Innovative Design

In the Innovative Design challenge, students create a prototype that must have certain conditions of strength, stability and mobility. This mechanism will have to be designed by the participating team from unconventional materials within a certain time limit, and at the end of the challenge the mechanism that fulfils the most pre-defined conditions for judging will be declared the winner.
